Farmers Market Season is on!
It’s mid-summer, and that means local farmers everywhere are in the height of summer crop harvests, fall plantings, and trying desperately to manage the onslaught of weeds competing with our crops. Since we use no machinery, we’ve been working extra hard to remove old plantings, turn over beds, and stay on top of our seedings of greens, carrots, beets, lettuces, herbs, etc. At our small and intensive scale, we weed and cultivate entirely by hand, which keeps us extra busy throughout the long summer months.
We also began attending the Frederick Douglass Square Farmers Market two Saturdays ago. We’ll be there (998 Tremont Street, Roxbury) every Saturday (11AM-5PM) until late October. We harvest everything the morning of the market, so we invite you to come celebrate with us the freshest, most local food you can get in the city. You can purchase City Growers’ produce here, as well as delicious Roxbury-grown produce from The Village Farm and gorgeous, sustainably-grown local flowers from some talented young flower farmers in Lower Roxbury. Don’t miss it!
Stay tuned, also, for more photos and updates of our developments at our new Glenway Street urban farm site in Dorchester. We’ve also been hard at work transforming this vacant city lot into a vibrant urban farm, and we hope it’s the first of many more to come to hand over to Boston’s future urban farmers.
